SPIN program employs thousands Cebu Freeman 2/27/09

Despite the dwindling orders from the world market, some Cebu-based exporters have somehow helped thousands of rural residents in the Visayas region by providing them with decent livelihood. Since 2008, SPIN conducted 60 trainings to 2,805 beneficiaries-composed of 2,730 residents and 75 trained armies from across 35 municipalities in the region.

The SPIN program provides income-generating opportunities for families in far-flung towns, including cleared conflict areas, serving as direct subcontractors for specific job orders coming from Cebu-based export groups.

Apart from job generation, Caberte said the program allows exporters a cost-effective way to make their products. “Exporters can now replicate the skills in reproducing these items by subcontracting it to the marginalized sector, thus increasing production.”
