Overseas jobs beckon as crisis deepens Manila Times 3/7/09

Four Canadian provinces, which have signed labor agreements with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) for the supply of Filipino workers needed by their construction and infrastructure projects, have expressed fears of a serious economic crisis if there were no workers to fill highly-skilled positions.

Saudi Arabia has announced that it needs and will immediately hire 60,000 nurses. Japan will start hiring Filipino nurses, caregivers and other professionals next month as the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (Jpepa) comes into effect. Japan also will continue heavily employing Filipino seamen; 70 percent of the crew in its ocean-going vessels are Filipinos.
Most households in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Italy and Malaysia will continue to hire Filipino maids to allow mothers to leave their children and work in high-paying jobs to boost the family income.
