SPIN program employs thousands Cebu Freeman 2/27/09

Despite the dwindling orders from the world market, some Cebu-based exporters have somehow helped thousands of rural residents in the Visayas region by providing them with decent livelihood. Since 2008, SPIN conducted 60 trainings to 2,805 beneficiaries-composed of 2,730 residents and 75 trained armies from across 35 municipalities in the region.

The SPIN program provides income-generating opportunities for families in far-flung towns, including cleared conflict areas, serving as direct subcontractors for specific job orders coming from Cebu-based export groups.

Apart from job generation, Caberte said the program allows exporters a cost-effective way to make their products. “Exporters can now replicate the skills in reproducing these items by subcontracting it to the marginalized sector, thus increasing production.”

The jobs created under the CLEEP include infrastructure maintenance, rehabilitation of hospital facilities, micro-enterprise development as well as job opportunities in environmental protection.

“Some 64,000 Filipino workers and 580 households have already found new jobs and income opportunities through the President’s CLEEP as of February 25 this year,” Panganiban said.

Overseas jobs beckon as crisis deepens Manila Times 3/7/09

Four Canadian provinces, which have signed labor agreements with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) for the supply of Filipino workers needed by their construction and infrastructure projects, have expressed fears of a serious economic crisis if there were no workers to fill highly-skilled positions.

Saudi Arabia has announced that it needs and will immediately hire 60,000 nurses. Japan will start hiring Filipino nurses, caregivers and other professionals next month as the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (Jpepa) comes into effect. Japan also will continue heavily employing Filipino seamen; 70 percent of the crew in its ocean-going vessels are Filipinos.
Most households in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Italy and Malaysia will continue to hire Filipino maids to allow mothers to leave their children and work in high-paying jobs to boost the family income.

Skilled workers in short supply Manila Times February 13, 2009

Expansion plans of most local privately held businesses are held back by the shortage of skilled workers, according to an international business report. “This is true particularly in the business process outsourcing industry, where the hiring rate is still around 4 percent to 6 percent of applicants, and in the construction industry, which is always in demand for highly skilled welders and electro-mechanical workers.

Outsourcing, tourism firms offer more jobs Cebu Sunstar 3/16/09

JobsDB.com Philippines sales manager Philip Pogiongko said that in the company’s network, many international and local employers announce vacancies for positions related to accounting, engineering, information technology, construction and seafaring jobs, among others.

Countries like Canada and Australia are looking for several skilled workers, including plumbers, while in the Middle East, hotel and construction companies have announced their need for more personnel.

Jobs and skills mismatch keeps unemployment high Cebu Freeman 3/16/09

He also said that nowadays, jobs that are now in demand include accounting, hotel services, animators, seafarers and other IT-related skills.

Right now, nurses and other medical-related courses is already saturated in the job market and those with these competencies are being recruited to work for airline companies and other sectors that need this kind of support in their workforce.

Entrepreneur opens skills training center Cebu Freeman 3/17/09

Cebu As most companies these days are cutting on cost to manage the impact of the economic recession, ample skills that require lesser training is now becoming a prerequisite for a worker to land a good job.

This is one of the reasons why entrepreneur Glenn Anthony O. Soco opened up a new venture called Global Power Skills Development Center, Inc., which offers short training courses on housekeeping, food and beverage service and bartending.

Military, cops need 13,700 recruits Manila Standard 3/3/09

THE Armed Forces and the police are in need of 13,700 new recruits this year as they augment their ranks to put an end to the communist insurgency and thwart terror plots.

Armed Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Ernesto Torres said the military is recruiting 6,700 soldiers equivalent to 13 full-force battalions.

Torres said the Army gets the bulk of recruits at 3,900; the Navy, 800; and the Air Force, 600 new pilots. Armed Forces leaders have vowed to end the communist insurgency before the end of President Arroyo’s term in 2010, a goal that requires additional men and firepower.

Torres said the military also needs 1,400 technical personnel—lawyers, doctors and nurses, among others—to beef up its non-combatant personnel.

For the Army recruitment go to their website Philippine Army Recruitment Website

National Police Chief Jesus Verzosa said the recruitment for new policemen will be done in three batches— 3,000 for the first semester, 3,000 for the second semester and 1,000 more for the National Capital Region Police Office.

“Applicants can proceed to the nearest police station and submit documentary requirements,” police spokesman Chief Supt. Nicanor Bartolome said.
